Maybe you have heard about this Metaverse and there is also a term called Multiverse floating around! You might be wondering how they are similar or different.
The Metaverse is a virtual reality world and the Multiverse is a crazy theory that there are many different universes.
Keep reading and I’ll share how Facebook ties into the metaverse, how the multiverse theory was created the differences between web 1.0 to 6.0, how VR and augmented reality are different, and the 1 thing that Facebook really should do!
What is the Metaverse?
The Metaverse is a virtual reality world, which can be hard to wrap your mind around.
Imagine instead of seeing the internet “on a screen” you put on a VR headset and the internet is all around you. This is the vision of the Metaverse. Some people feel that personal ownership of things will be available in this world.
We are starting to see this with NFT’s and blockchain technology. Oh, there are LOTS of scams with NFT’s and if you are interested in learning about there here is a post I made about this.
Considering how marketers “break everything,” meaning they try to “sell lots of shit” it makes sense. Yea, I know I just try to sell a link!
Funny enough crypto was created by marketers spamming people in email. The proof of work mining system was first used to fight email spam.
There are also crypto projects like this one HERE that I wrote about where you can purchase virtual land with real money. (Hey, I’m trying to be helpful with the links).
Maybe in this Metaverse you could purchase a VR jacket and wear it around like a skin in the game Fortnight?
There is a theory that there are different versions of the internet or web.
Web 1.0 has to do with basic internet, with email, text, and slow internet speed. Web 2.0 is what we are experiencing now with high internet speed more video, social media, and podcasting.
Web 3.0 is going to bring more virtual worlds and personal ownership of pieces of that world. We are going to need even faster internet to get there such as 5G. This Metaverse will be in a Web 3.0
In theory, 5G technology will reach speeds that are 20 times faster than 4G. 5G means just (5th Generation) of broadband cellular technology.
After Web 3.0 it gets crazy! there is a theory of Web 4.0 that this is where humans will interact with machines like AI.
There is also a theory that web 5.0 will be a sensory or feeling internet. Content will respond to someone and how they feel.
Web 6.0 is when we get trapped within the internet like The Matrix movie and machines run the world. Ok, I’m joking about web 6.0.
You might also have heard of Facebook changing its name to Meta. What this means is the parent company has changed its name to Meta, but the app Facebook is still called Facebook.
The company Facebook used to own Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp and now Meta does.
Why the name change? I think it’s because Meta or Facebook wants to make as much money as possible in the metaverse.
When you think of the metaverse you’re going to think of “Meta” first. When you do purchase something for the metaverse like VR gear or NFT’s you might go to (Meta or Facebook) before any of the competition.
You might be wondering how VR (virtual reality) is different than augmented reality. VR is when you put a headset on and see a virtual world. Augmented reality is when you see computer-generated images in the real world.
I used to think the name change was stupid, but now I think it could be a good idea. For one thing, it shows that Facebook or Meta is thinking ahead and that is good.
What is the Multiverse?
The Multiverse is a theory that there are other universe’s just like ours hence the name (multiverse). If you’re not sure what a universe is it contains many galaxies, stars, planets and is always growing.
A galaxy is a system that contains gas, a shit load of stars, and the “milky way” is 1 galaxy. Oh, there are around 100 billion planets in the milky way galaxy.
The picture below is what happens to my brain when I think about this.
There are actually “many” TV shows about this idea. There is Stargate, Westworld, Sliders, and even a book series called Discworld.
Discworld is about a flat planet that elephants carry the world on a giant turtle. I have not read the books, but I wonder if the author was on some good drugs when he come up with this idea?
This “whole” theory of many universes has its roots when American astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered in the 1920’s that the Universe is expanding because galaxies are receding from the Milky Way.
The farther away they are the faster they move away!
NASA named the world’s first space-based telescope from Edwin Hubble due to this discovery.
I’m thinking that someone (maybe on drugs) took this discovery of the universe expanding (expanded his/her mind) and thought shit maybe there are other universes.
That person told someone else that (maybe was on drugs) and they believed it and this whole theory came about.
The One Thing Facebook Should Do!
Facebook has done a lot right and I’m happy Facebook does exist. I think social media companies expose people for who they “really” are.
You can use it for positivity or negativity!
Recently I listened to an interview with a Facebook moderator that you can find right HERE. Warning it’s the MOST disturbing interview I’ve listened to.
The moderator had a job where he watched many videos of people doing some really horrible shit (I’m not going to describe). According to the moderator, Facebook’s philosophy was to do nothing.
This reminds me of a saying…
Facebook should use “its power” to put up the bat signal to call Batman or the police.
Some people are upset that Facebook and ALL the social media companies earn money from their work. I’m not upset by this because Facebook has bills to pay and this is why the app is free.
You’re probably going to use these social media companies including the Metaverse in the future. There is a way you can earn money from your posts, just like Facebook does.
I’m sure you could use the money MORE right? If you’re interested in this then I recommend checking this out HERE.
Closing
I’m “very” skeptical of the Metaverse because during the Covid 19 pandemic what kept my sanity was working a normal job where I had to go somewhere in the real world and talk to real people.
The “real world” is healthy for mental health just like sleep.
There is a thing called Zoom burnout and a study at Standford shows that in-person communication leads us to be happier. You can read more about this study HERE.
Brain scans showed greater activity in the reward regions of the brain during “real world” communications compared to virtual interactions.
Realistically due to travel and time SOME “internet” does offer great benefits! Honestly, the internet has made me some good money.
How much the internet will take over our lives is worth thinking about. I’m NOT perfect at this either I have to force myself to stop using the internet!
I hope this post on what is the difference between the metaverse and multiverse was helpful to you. Bye for now.
