DreamHost Pre-Flight Checklist
Complete these 4 steps before you change your GoDaddy nameservers to avoid website downtime.
How to Point a GoDaddy Domain to DreamHost Nameservers
Step 1: Log In to DreamHost to Find Your Custom Nameservers
I thought it would be easy to do this, but I had to do some digging.
First, I wen’t to the support, then the knowledge base. Then I typed in “How to point GoDaddy domain to Dreamhost Nameservers.”
I got hit with all kinds of answers, and the second option is the one I wanted.

This brought up a page that had the nameservers on it, if you scroll down to the middle part.
It’s these 3 names that have DreamHost at the end.

Step 2: Log In to GoDaddy to Manage Your DNS Settings
Next, I login at Godaddy.
On the left, there is a button that says “portfolio.”
I click on that, and it brings up my domains. The one you want to host, I clicked on the 3 dots next to the domain.
A menu popped open, and I scrolled down to the bottom until I saw an option to “edit Nameservers.”

When you click on “Edit Nameservers,” it will bring up a way to change them.
Then you simply copy and paste the nameservers you found on the DreamHost page to GoDaddy.
- ns1.dreamhost.com
- ns2.dreamhost.com
- ns3.dreamhost.com

It will look like the picture above.
It can take up to 48 hours to change the nameservers.
DreamHost is a great hosting company that I currently use.
Most web hosts offer a strict 30-day refund window. Dreamhost gives users a 97-day money-back guarantee on their shared hosting plans.
Many competitors trick users by showing a cheap price ($2.95/mo), but forcing them to pay for 3 or 4 years upfront to get that rate.
If they want to pay month-to-month, the price spikes to $15 or $20. Dreamhost is famous for keeping its true month-to-month plans incredibly cheap and accessible.
Also, if you’ve ever bought hosting from a budget provider, you know the checkout process is a minefield of pre-checked boxes for add-ons you don’t need.
Even worse, your bill doubles or triples when it’s time to renew.
Dreamhost is highly praised for a clean checkout and much more transparent, stable renewal rates.
💡 GoDaddy to DreamHost DNS Troubleshooter
Changed your nameservers but your site isn’t working? Select your exact situation below to find the fix.
What do you see when you visit your domain right now?
How long ago did you click “Save” on the GoDaddy nameservers?
Did you completely delete the original GoDaddy nameservers?
What exact text do you see on the DreamHost screen?
Diagnosis: Standard DNS Propagation Delay
GoDaddy updates its central servers fast, but local internet service providers all over the world hold onto old data to save bandwidth. It generally takes anywhere from 1 to 4 hours for the change to stick.
whatsmydns.net (set to NS) to see if the world is picking it up yet.Diagnosis: Caching Issue (Your Computer is Lying)
If it has been more than 4 hours, the change is almost certainly live globally, but your web browser or computer’s system memory is stubbornly remembering the old GoDaddy location.
ipconfig /flushdns (Windows) or sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder (Mac).Diagnosis: Mixed Nameserver Conflict
Websites cannot have two masters. If you left GoDaddy’s default nameservers in the list alongside your new DreamHost ones, your traffic will split randomly. Half your visitors will see a broken site, and half will see your new site.
dreamhost.com. You should only have lines 1, 2, and 3 populated with DreamHost info.Diagnosis: Typo or Host Addition Failure
If the domain won’t resolve at all and there are no old records, either there is a typo in the spelling of the nameservers, or the domain hasn’t been mapped to an active server partition inside your hosting account.
.com, not .net). Secondly, log into your DreamHost Control Panel, click ‘Websites’, and confirm your domain name is explicitly listed as ‘Fully Hosted’ in the active list.Diagnosis: DreamHost Provisioning Process
Congratulations! If you see a DreamHost error or success screen, it means **your GoDaddy configuration was 100% correct**. The nameservers are pointing safely to your host. The message you see is simply DreamHost setting up the virtual folder directory for your site files.
Diagnosis: Missing Security Certificate (SSL)
Your connection is cutting through securely from GoDaddy to DreamHost, but your browser is blocking it because it doesn’t detect a secure encrypted connection file matching the new host destination.
What Does a Nameserver Do and Why Does It Matter for Your Website?
When someone types in your domain name, the computer is asking GoDaddy where are the files?
GoDaddy then responds, “I don’t have the files, but here are the nameservers, go ask them.”
Then the computer goes to those nameservers, which are like a direction sign pointing to the exact web hosting server where your website’s files, images, and content are stored.
The Importance of Having Multiple Nameservers for Website Redundancy
Ever wonder why there are 2 or more nameservers? Dreamhost has 3 of them.
It’s for security.
So if a massive power outage, cyberattack, or tech glitch takes 1 nameserver offline, then the second nameserver takes over.
This is so your website doesn’t experience downtime, which is a bummer and has happened to me a few times.
1 time I didn’t update the SSL certificate or some small thing like that.
Dreamhost is nice because tech support walked me through getting it up again, fast.
Have you ever wondered about free hosting? I did because I’m very frugal. Let me tell you, I would not mess with free hosting.
I actually wrote a whole blog post about how free web hosting companies make money.
What to Do After Connecting Your Domain to Web Hosting
Now that you have a domain and it’s hosted, the next step is to choose a theme.
A theme is a very personal topic, almost like clothes.
Lucky for you, I wrote an in-depth guide all about the 10 must-have features of a free WordPress theme.
How to Write Blog Content That Converts Traffic Into Sales
You might be wondering whether it is even possible to earn money with this website thingy.
The answer is yes.
The good news is you own the website. The bad news with building a business on Reddit, for example, is that a moderator can shut you down at any time.
Funny enough, that happened to me.
I spent 8 months building a group, and 1 day, someone posted something, and I don’t even know what it was, and someone high up the food chain decided to ban my entire group.
8 months of hard work down the drain.
With a website, you have a little more security.

Closing: How to point GoDaddy domain to DreamHost Nameservers
I hope this post might have been helpful.
Now that you have a website, the single best thing I’ve purchased was a good ergonomic chair.

Before I had this stool and started experiencing back pain.
What is crazy is that it’s not just back pain, but a good ergonomic chair helps the neck, shoulders, and even helps improve blood flow.
An ergonomic chair also takes pressure off your hip bones and tailbone, which prevents tight hip flexors and misaligned pelvic bones.
Lastly, it can help with productivity and keeping your focus. You can check if Amazon has any sales on them.
Have a great day!
