The #1 Rule to Pick the Best Affiliate Programs for a Blog
Would you promote the offer to your Mom or Very close friend?
If not don’t promote it to anyone else.
Of course, this is within reason. For example, for 2 years I was promoting a covid tax credit for small business owners. To qualify, someone had to have W2 employees during the Covid crisis.
My mom or very close friend could NOT qualify, but it was the coolest product EVER!
It was SO good I would feel like a jerk if I didn’t share it with people.
If you’re thinking of promoting a product, run it through the (mom / close friend) test and see if it passes or fails!
Is it Helpful to Your Audience?
This seems like common sense, but you want affiliate offers to naturally fit. If your blog post is about landscaping, you don’t want to stick an affiliate offer that has to do with finding your soul mate inside.
Unless that soul mate has to do with landscaping.
Unrelated affiliate offers or inappropriate messages are considered spam and NOT cool.
You want the offers you present to your audience to be as targeted as possible. Just follow the golden rule!
Do unto others as you want them to do to you!
Would you want to read a post with a bunch of random unrelated stuff that is being recommended? If it’s disorganized and hurts the user experience, then it could also backfire.
Evaluate the Affiliate Product’s Sales Page!
Evaluating the product’s sales page is a personal choice.
- Do you like it?
- Do you feel good recommending it to others?
- Does it look outdated?
- Is it confusing to you?
The main thing is you feel good recommending the product to other people.
Check Commission Rates When Evaluating an Offer!
If you are between 2 affiliate offers 1 pays 1% and the other pays 50%, which is better?
Yeah, the higher percentage means more money in your pocket. Of course, there are other things to consider, but the percentage rate matters.
You are doing “a lot” of work promoting the thing you should get paid!
There is a way to keep 100% of the money when promoting a product and this entails creating the product yourself. The bad news is that takes a lot of work.
A nifty trick to keep 100% of the money, and do no work to create it is to check out this site HERE. You also have lots of flexibility with charging whatever you want, can give them away as bonuses, use them as lead magnets, bundle them together for more money, and more.
What is the Conversion Rate?
A great sales page, and a high commission rate mean nothing if it doesn’t convert.
Now, if you are an “amazing” affiliate and you have a great relationship with your prospect, you still can market products that have a bad conversion rate. Maybe the product is great, but the sales copy sucks!
With a great relationship with your prospect, you can even tell them to skip the sales page and buy the product and they will do it, because they know, like, and trust you!
But we are trying to make our job as easy as possible!
This is an important data point when evaluating products. When in doubt pick a product with a high conversion rate!

What is the Refund Rate?
If lots of people are refunding a product then that is not a good sign. You want this number to be as low as possible. If the refund rate is TOO high then it might be better to keep looking for other products.
This is also why some vendors can be picky about accepting new affiliates.
Now, if you have a list and you mention this to vendors, then you are more likely to get accepted. Building an email list was pounded into my head when I got started in affiliate marketing 15 years ago.
If you’re not sure how to do email marketing correctly, I recommend my free guide HERE. Whether you are experienced or brand new this free guide will give you value and help increase your sales.
Check the Cookie Duration!
Cookies are how you get the commission when promoting an affiliate offer. If someone clicks on your link and checks out a sales page, that cookie is then assigned to you.
You want this cookie duration to be as long as possible.
If the cookie duration is 6 months, then anytime within that 6-month period you can get credit when they make a purchase!
If the cookie duration is 24 hours then you ONLY get credit if they purchase within those 24 hours.
How Reputable is the Vendor or Seller?
One way to find this out is by doing a Google Search on who is selling the product. If you see some results on affiliates not getting paid, then that is a red flag and maybe it’s best to pick another product.
Pick a High EPC
Yep, the granddaddy method of evaluating products is the EPC or Earnings Per Click. Naturally, you want this to be as big as possible.
This is the average amount of money you will earn if someone clicks on your affiliate link. If the EPC is $1.00 then on average every time someone clicks on this link the affiliate gets $1.00.
Remember this is an average number it doesn’t guarantee you will get “exactly” $1.00 for every click! Some affiliates get 0.50 cents a click and some could get $1.50 for example.
How Many Have Sold?
The higher the number of products sold the better. The product is battle-tested, and all the EPC, refund rate, and conversation rate numbers are more accurate.
It’s just less risky to sell products that have been tested and purchased by more people. There is more of a chance the creator improved the sales copy and product over time.
Test the Product Yourself!
Testing and using the product yourself is another great way to evaluate a product. This can help with your sales copy and improve your conversions.
Just because you haven’t used a product, doesn’t mean you can’t promote it – but it can help.
The main thing is you feel good about what you’re sharing with the world.
Where to Find Great Affiliate Programs to Promote?
- JVzoo
JVzoo is my top place to find affiliate programs. You can get a high percentage of the revenue with a lot of the offers. Most offers have a funnel, so if you sell 1 product there is a chance to get even more sales.
Plus, I like the user interface!
- Clickbank
Clickbank is another great choice because they have a wide variety of niches and have been around for a long time. You can also get a high percentage of the sale and some programs do have a funnel to get more money.
The downfall with Clickbank is its fine print.
This means someone has to earn 5 sales from 2 different payment methods to get paid! These payment methods include…
- American Express
- Diners Club
- MasterCard
- PayPal
- Visa
If you got 10 sales all using Visa then you’re not going to get paid until you get a sale from another payment method! I know it sucks, but it’s their rule!
The reason for this rule is to stop people from buying products from their own links to get a discount.
- CJ.com
CJ.com is another great network. What I don’t like about them is their user interface is not user-friendly, there is a learning curve to it. Also, the commission rates can be lower, but they do have a lot of big brand names!
- Awin or Sharesale
Recently both of these companies merged. Also, be prepared to pay $1 dollar to join this network. This is to verify your bank details and minimize the risk of shady marketing tactics.
You also need to have some sort of website to join.
- Digistore24
Digistore24 is a smaller marketplace, but still great. They also have a security deposit. This means they keep 10% of your earnings and this gets paid to you after 60 days. 90% of your money gets paid to you within after 14 days.
This is to help deal with refunds.
- Flexoffers
When you first start out with Flexoffers you have to wait 60 days to get paid. Eventually, this can change to 7 days.
- Amazon
Amazon used to be the go-to place for affiliate offers because they have “everything.” Oh and if someone clicks on your link and makes ANY purchase at the website within 24 hours, you get a percentage of the sale.
The problem is Amazon doesn’t need affiliates and their commission rate has been dropping as fast as a chicken nugget flying off a fork like a tiny, edible missile.
This means that for every sale you could earn 0.5 cents.
Ok, I’m exaggerating maybe 0.50 cents, but you get my point you need TONS of traffic to get decent money, so it’s last on my list of choices. Still, if it helps your reader then that should be priority #1 right?
Plus, it’s still money!
I just scratched the surface on where to find affiliate offers. In fact, if you scroll to the bottom of many websites you just might find an affiliate program that you can join.

Extra Tip to Get MORE Cash Promoting an Affiliate Offer!
Super affiliates get more perks than newbies. This means that if you have some sales under your belt it doesn’t hurt to reach out to the vendor and ask for an increase in the percentage you get.
Now, first, you need some sales and it doesn’t hurt to ask. Don’t do this too much because you don’t want to get blacklisted by any vendors.
The squeaky wheel does get the grease, but sometimes it gets replaced!
But if you have made the vendor some money and they don’t to lose you as an affiliate, then you might get an increase in commission – just by asking.
Conclusion
There really are TONS of places to find affiliate offers. Just remember you have the leverage when picking offers.
If you’re not sure about promoting something – just skip it!
In the long run, people buy from those they like, know, and trust. You want the products you promote to reflect this.
Next, it “really” helps to have a landing page and send out emails. This way when they leave your blog, you can still contact them. Plus your sales will skyrocket if you know what you’re doing with emails. Lucky for you I’ve created a FREE guide on how to do this.
